1. Venice
Stay
About the destination: Venice is a city like no other: a labyrinth of canals, marble palaces, and hidden courtyards floating on the Adriatic. Built on more than 100 small islands, it has no roads—only waterways and narrow alleys that suddenly open onto breathtaking piazzas. At its heart lies St. Mark’s Square, framed by the dazzling Basilica di San Marco, the Doge’s Palace, and the iconic Campanile. From here, you can wander under arcades lined with cafés and listen to live orchestras as the sun sets over the lagoon. The Grand Canal is Venice’s main thoroughfare, curving through the city like a glittering highway of water. Riding a vaporetto (water bus) offers a front-row view of Gothic and Renaissance palaces, their facades reflected in the rippling surface. For a more intimate experience, slip into one of the smaller canals on a gondola and glide beneath low stone bridges, passing quiet neighborhoods where laundry hangs over the water and church bells echo between the walls. Beyond the famous sights, Venice rewards slow exploration. Lose yourself in the districts of Cannaregio and Dorsoduro, where local bacari (wine bars) serve cicchetti—small Venetian tapas—alongside spritz and local wines. Cross the Rialto Bridge to visit its bustling market, where fishmongers and fruit vendors supply the city’s kitchens, and artisans sell Murano glass and traditional masks. Each sestiere (district) has its own character, from elegant San Marco to the more bohemian, artsy feel of Dorsoduro. Venice also makes an ideal base for exploring the lagoon islands. Take a short boat ride to Murano, famous for its centuries-old glassmaking tradition, where you can watch master glassblowers at work. Continue to Burano, a photographer’s dream with its brightly painted houses and lace workshops, and then on to Torcello, a peaceful island with ancient churches and a rare sense of quiet. Whether you come for art, history, or romance, Venice offers a dreamlike atmosphere that lingers long after you leave.

2. La Spezia
Stay
About the destination: The city of La Spezia is located ubidacada in the region of Liguria, in Northern Italy, and is at the same time the capital of the province that has the same name, located in the Gulf of La Spezia, also known as Golfo dei Poeti (of the poets) since it was the residence for some time of important English poets such as Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) and George Byron (1788-1824). Said is the commercial port, one of the most important in Italy although La Spezia also hosts one of the biggest military industries of the country: OTO Melara. Although La Spezia stands out as a modern city (almost all the buildings were built from 1920), there are many places of interest in the surrounding area since the area has very beautiful villages such as Lerici, Portovenere (typical fishing village) and the Cinque Terre, where a national Natural Park has been developed. Cinque Terre, Portovenere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, have been declared by the Unesco as world heritage.

3. Pisa
Stay
About the destination: The city of Pisa once rivalled Genoa and Venice as a maritime power, emulated Padua and Perugia as a university town, and developed a distinctive style of Romanesque architecture. Today, the city draws its fame from an architectural project gone terribly wrong and relies on the tide of tourists who flow into the city every day. The most important monuments are concentrated in the piazza del Duomo. The baptistery, cathedral, Leaning Tower, and Camposanto shine like carved ivory, rising out of a broad expanse of emerald green grass. The duomo contains Giovanni Pisano’s masterful pulpit, with its violently dramatic Gothic reliefs. You can make your unbalanced way to the top of the Torre Pendente, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, from which local boy Galileo Galilei dropped a variety of objects in his attempt to understand gravity. Education has fuelled the local economy since the 1400s, and students from across Italy still compete for places in its elite university and research schools and help keep a vibrant and affordable cafe and bar scene. This metropolis of a hundred thousand inhabitants is much more than a tower, is a city full of art and history.

4. Perugia
Stay
About the destination: Perugia, the hilltop capital of Umbria, combines medieval charm with a lively, contemporary atmosphere. Enclosed by ancient Etruscan walls and crowned by stone palaces and churches, the city offers sweeping views over rolling green hills, vineyards, and olive groves. Its historic center, largely pedestrian, is a maze of narrow alleyways, hidden staircases, and sunlit squares that invite slow wandering and spontaneous discovery. At the heart of Perugia lies Piazza IV Novembre, one of Italy’s most beautiful squares, dominated by the magnificent Fontana Maggiore and the Gothic bulk of the Palazzo dei Priori. Inside the palace, the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria houses masterpieces by Perugino, Pinturicchio, and other Renaissance masters. Just a short walk away, the imposing Etruscan Arch and the underground Rocca Paolina—an entire buried neighborhood beneath a 16th‑century fortress—offer a fascinating journey through layers of history. Perugia is also a vibrant university town, home to both the Università degli Studi and the University for Foreigners, which gives the city a youthful, international feel. Cafés, bars, and wine enotecas buzz late into the night, especially along Corso Vannucci, the elegant main street. Cultural life is rich and varied: the world‑famous Umbria Jazz Festival in July and the Eurochocolate festival in October draw visitors from all over the world for concerts, tastings, and street performances. Food in Perugia reflects Umbrian traditions: think truffle‑infused dishes, hearty lentil and bean stews, homemade pasta, and robust local wines such as Sagrantino di Montefalco. Don’t miss tasting Perugia’s famed chocolates—from artisan pralines in tiny patisseries to the iconic Baci. With its blend of art, history, gastronomy, and a relaxed local rhythm, Perugia makes an ideal base for exploring the “green heart of Italy” or for simply soaking up authentic Italian life in a compact, walkable city.
